What is USAT sanctioning and what does it mean?
USA Triathlon is the governing body of triathlon in the United States and they set and are responsible for enforcing all of the rules and guidelines associated with the sport. By having a race sanctioned through USAT, you are ensuring two things:

That the race is going to be conducted in a safe, professional, and sportsmanlike manner. Also that all rules pertaining to safety and drafting will be enforced.

That all competitors, volunteers, and spectators will be covered by a race day insurance policy.
This is not to say that other races that don't offer USAT sanctioning are not good, just that the sanctioning provides clear guidelines and makes the race directors accountable to USAT if they want to continue being sanctioned.
